Purpose Statement
The job of Transportation Mechanic II is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the educational process with specific responsibilities for identifying repairs and/or replacement needs for District school busses, vehicles and/or heavy equipment; assisting and/or performing repairs and preventive maintenance; ensuring completion of repairs in accordance with trade standards; and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site.
This job reports to Transportation Mechanic IV
Essential Functions
Attends unit in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
Diagnoses equipment malfunctions (e.g. brakes, lights, oil leaks, etc.) for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements.
Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing items necessary for repairs.
Inspects assigned equipment (e.g. brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, general conditions, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
Prepares written materials (e.g. repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, trip checks, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements.
Repairs and/or replaces seats, seat covers, windows and windshields for the purpose of ensuring vehicle is in safe operating condition.
Repairs, under supervision, busses, vehicles and/or heavy equipment (e.g. tractors, back hoes, forklifts, mixers, skip loaders, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
Responds to service calls for the purpose of repairing or towing vehicle.
Transports tools, equipment and/or supplies for the purpose of providing on-site repairs.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; operating equipment used in vehicle repair and maintenance; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; diesel and electrical systems; trends in automotive diagnosis and repair.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude; adapting to changing work priorities; being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; maintaining a good rapport with employees, students and community.

Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, significant climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 0% sitting, 30% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience: Job related experience is required.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
