Purpose Statement
The job of Transportation Dispatcher is done for the purpose/s of providing support the educational process with specific responsibilities for coordinating and assigning drivers to regularly scheduled routes, special excursions and field trips; processing requests pertaining to routine and emergency issues; maintaining department records in accordance with mandated requirements; and coordinating assigned projects.
This job reports to Director of Transportation
Essential Functions
Assists in the planning of bus routes and schedules for the purpose of ensuring all routes are covered.
Collaborates with contracted charter busses for additional transportation needs (e.g. field trips, athletic events, etc.) for the purpose of determining driver and equipment requirements to ensure adequate transportation coverage.
Coordinates busses and drivers for extra curricular activities (e.g. field trips, athletic events, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring transportation.
Dispatches drivers for the purpose of meeting the schedule demands.
Informs school personnel and parents of practices (e.g. rules, regulations, laws, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of providing information for their follow-up action and/or proper procedures.
Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files and/or records for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reliable information and complying with administrative requirements.
Operates a two-way radio in accordance with FCC regulations for the purpose of gathering and/or conveying information.
Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
Performs the functions of Transportation Bus Drivers, as needed, for the purpose of meeting student transportation requirements.
Processes a variety of materials (e.g. field trip requests, route changes, etc.) for the purpose of updating and distributing information, authorizing action and/or complying with mandated requirements.
Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff for the purpose of providing the necessary information, direction and/or resolution.
Responds to injuries and/or accidents for the purpose of complying with established policies and regulatory guidelines.
Schedules work assignments for bus drivers and bus aides for the purpose of ensuring completion of transportation routes in a safe and timely manner and in accordance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating two way radio and county emergency radio; operating standard office equipment including utilizing
pertinent software applications; performing standard clerical procedures; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent department policies and procedures; office practices and procedures; concepts of grammar and punctuation; first aid and CPR.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working with detailed information/data; working with frequent interruption; maintaining a good rapport with employees, students, parents and the public.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
Experience: Job related experience is desired.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
