CE Summer Registered Nurse 2018

 

  • Level:  Elementary with Middle/High School support
  • Location:  CE Mascot Childcare Camp with location TBD
  • Program Dates:  5/30/18 - 7/27/18 (setup date 5/29/18), Monday through Friday (no camp 7/4/18) 
  • Hours:  9:00am - 4:00pm (hours may be extended based on student needs and field trips)
  • # of Positions:  Pool of 2
  • Rate:  $33.00/hour - timesheet, mileage reimbursement

 

Special instructions:

  1. One nurse must be on-site daily 9:00am - 4:00pm.  Nurses may share coverage, i.e., alternating 2 and 3-day shifts, alternating AMs and PMs, or alternating weeks, etc. Schedule to be mutually agreed upon by nurses and administration.
  2. Supports other summer programs/sites.
  3. Travels to field trip locations and other summer sites.  Mileage reimbursement.
  4. Gathers statistics for district reports.
  5. Hours may vary to accommodate student needs.

Purpose Statement

The School Nurse is a registered, professional nurse who serves the school community to oversee school health policies and programs. The School Nurse provides expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education. The School Nurse uses professional knowledge and judgment in providing health care to students, performs health screenings and coordinates referrals to healthcare providers. The School Nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers to advocate for student health care/wellness and a healthy school environment. The School Nurse possesses effective organizational and critical thinking skills. The School Nurse utilizes effective verbal and written communication skills.

 

Essential Functions

Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program.

 

Maintains information about the health and developmental status of students.

 

Supports nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions delineating school nursing action unique to student’s needs.

 

Maintains nursing care that promotes, maintains, or restores health and prevents illness.

 

Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

 

Documents nursing care via computer program.

 

Gathers statistics for district and state reports.

 

Ensures compliance with Arizona State Immunization requirements for all students throughout the school year.

 

Participates in the Medicaid in Public Schools (MIPS) program as defined by district policies.

 

Conducts annual health screenings and referrals as defined by district policies and/or mandated by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

 

Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes.

 

Counsels students and families for the purpose of improving student performance, health status, problem-solving techniques and a variety of personal issues.

 

 

Assesses, plans and implements school health services in collaboration with other school/district staff.

 

Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g., staff, district, IEPs, 504’s, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering medical and health-related data/information required to perform functions.

 

Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g., student injury reports, Arizona School Health Annual Report [ASHAR], immunization data report, hearing screening report, etc.) for the purpose of documenting and meeting mandated requirements.

 

Reports student/school health and safety status to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g., fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining student personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.

 

Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel/agency for resolution.

 

Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g., other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.

 

Participates in school activities (e.g., open house, parent-teacher conferences).

 

Maintains current knowledge in the area of specialization.

 

Supports goals and objective of the school and district.

 

Job Requirements:  Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions/student health needs. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the function of the job include: applying nursing assessment tools, operating standard office equipment including use of personal computers and pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

 

KNOWLEDGE required to perform age-appropriate application of nursing process; epidemiological nursing framework for pediatric influences in the school setting (e.g., socio-demographic and other societal impacts); to assess common pediatric diseases/processes (e.g., chronic health conditions, birth defects); of federal and state mandates relating to school health services/practices.

 

ABILITY to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; to establish and maintain constructive relationships, adapt to changing work priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit tact and patience; to perform age-appropriate pediatric and adolescent physical/behavioral assessments; to follow school nurse policies and practice as dictated by state and district guidelines; to apply appropriate nursing theory as basis for decision-making in school nursing practice.

 

Must meet AZDHS qualifications.

 

Responsibility

Working under limited supervision using the Scope and Standards of Practice for School Nursing; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of resources from other work units.

 

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. 

 

Experience:   Minimum two years recent experience in a public nursing medical, pediatric or emergency room setting.

 

Education:    Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
